A major Queenstown firm has launched a monthly car fair in a bid to stop the town resembling a backpacker car lot.

Remarkables Park Ltd manager Olivia Porter says the entrance to Queenstown often looks untidy because rows of used vehicles.

Stanley Street, Frankton Road and surrounding streets have been used as an unofficial kerbside market for years by travellers and locals trying to sell on their cars, trucks and campervans.

Porter says the fair is an initiative by Remarkables Park to find a solution.

The first monthly fair will be held at Remarkables Park, opposite the Remarkables Red Barn, later this month.

Porter says: “Having vehicles all in one place will mean people can come and compare notes and talk directly to sellers.

“We think it will provide a great opportunity for those with cars, boats, campers and trailers to put them in front of buyers in one place at one time.”

The firm is also in discussions to provide buyers with vehicle inspection, insurance, finance and ownership verification.

Sellers will pay $20 to display their cars but no commission will be taken. The first 10 cars through the gates on the first day, Saturday, June 30, will be charged just $10.

Registration is from 9.30am with buyers welcome to attend at no charge from 10am-1pm.

The Remarkables Mid-Winter Market, being held as part of the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival, will be held at the Red Barn on the same day from 10am-3pm.
