To bail or not to bail…
That was the tough call for Positive Image camera store owners Bruce and Trudi McKay last Thursday as Lake Wakatipu’s flood threat rose.
They bailed but Bruce says it’s a catch-22 decision at his lower Beach Street shop – leave all his expensive gear in the store and risk it being ruined by water, or move it and risk damaging delicate computer components and bending photo frames.
The McKays were among retailers to suffer during the 1999 Big Wet and as a precaution bought a share in Queenstown Cameras in Camp St for storage space and so they could keep trading during floods.
Trudi says: “It’s really lucky it’s this time of year, quiet coming into winter. In 1999 it was November/December and we were absolutely gutted as a business.”
