Queenstown Primary’s outgoing principal John Western is urging the community to get behind Wakatipu High.
Western, who finishes at QPS tomorrow to take up a top job at Wellington’s Scots College, says he’s saddened by events that led to WHS principal Lyn Cooper’s dismissal a fortnight ago.
Cooper – who has lodged a claim against her sacking – was told to leave by Government appointee Peter MacDonald as part of a management overhaul.
Western says: “From an educational community’s perspective, I’m sad that things have turned out this way. But I’m also relieved we have a very capable board running the high school who have an immense amount of skill. I’m confident the board is moving in the right direction.”
The Education Review Office report that was damning of Cooper and her senior management team “strongly endorsed the good teaching there”, Western adds.
“The school is in a position to go from strength to strength. They have great teachers and kids.”
