World crashes down in Queenstown

The World has come crashing down – in Queenstown.

Queenstown nightlife institution The World Bar – gutted by fire in May – has been demolished as work begins on a rebuild.

A crane was on site tearing down the husk of the building last night.

Dave Boyd, director of building owner Boydcorp Finance told Mountain Scene in September the building on Shotover Street – apart from a section housing the neighbouring Quest shop – would be razed to ground level aside from a boundary wall against The Station building.

The World and Fat Badger’s, which was underneath it, are interested in returning, he said at the time.

The long-running World Bar, popular with backpackers and locals, plus a newly reopened ground-floor Fat Badger’s pizza restaurant were destroyed by a spectacular fire in the latter’s kitchen.
