Queenstown businesses can battle for supremacy – and a generous bar tab – at this year’s American Express Winter Festival.
Ten of the resort’s firms have the chance to claim bragging rights over rivals for at least a year via the new Pub on Wharf Festival Challenge.
It requires teams of four to compete in 10 challenges during the festival’s 10 days. Non-business teams are also welcome.
Events include a tug-of-war and selected events on the festival calendar, such as the Speight’s Dodgeball Championship and Frontrunner Golden Mile.
“The festival is all about participation,” festival manager Lisa Buckingham says.
“There’ll be a good rivalry between businesses in town and there are a lot of competitive people out there, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re over-subscribed.
“It will be great fun and there’s safety in numbers when competing as a team.”
The winners will be crowned Ultimate Festival Challengers and win a $250 bar tab for the waterfront/lower Beach Street bar.
“Every team will also be given a $50 bar tab, so they can discuss tactics over a beer,” Buckingham adds.
Other required team events include the Alpine Health and Fitness Zumba Mania, Jelly Belly Bean Boozled Undy 500 and the Auckland Airport Suitcase Race at Mountain Mayhem.
Team members will also have to demonstrate ice dancing skills with a routine on the rink and then face a final secret challenge at the pub on the closing Sunday.
Not all team members need to take part in every event.
Teams must register four members with two subs – 10 points are up for grabs for each challenge but points deducted for no shows.
It costs $50 per team, which includes a T-shirt and admission to all relevant events. Entries are open and close June 4.
