A bottle of Gibbston plonk signed by golf superstar Tiger Woods has fetched a record price for a New Zealand wine.
The jeroboam – containing about four litres of wine – was sold to a Chinese golf and wine enthusiast.
Representatives from international trading company JD Brothers and Mt Rosa approached Woods for his signature at last year’s China Open in order to aid earthquake reconstruction.
Mt Rosa co-owner Jeremy Railton was thrilled that Woods agreed to sign the bottle and that one of their wines has achieved a NZ record price.
“It’s pretty amazing that we’re able to add this accolade to our name, but even more than that we’re stoked that the money is going to such an amazing cause.”
Only 25 jereboams of the 2008 Mt Rosa Pinot Noir were bottled.
“The wine has redcurrant and wild exotic fruit aromatics followed by a warm rich and spicy texture with lively acidity and freshness and a lasting finish,” Railton says.
