Super-sized Queenstown Airport lounge

Queenstown Airport had yet another growth spurt with Thursday’s opening of an expanded departure lounge.

The $4.2 million 570 square metre extension doubles the size of the lounge and will be used for both international and domestic flights.

As well as extra passenger seating, there’s additional space for security screening, the airport says.

Airport boss Scott Paterson says the extra space “will help meet the demands of increasing passenger numbers”.

The resort airport continues to grow at an amazing pace – July set a new monthly passenger record, with 124,201 people travelling through the airport, 27 per cent up on July 2011.

For the 12 months to July this year, passenger numbers totalled 1,073,530 – up 16 per cent.
Paterson reckons the new departure lounge has “the best view of any airport in New Zealand”, looking out to the Remarkables.

“Departing passengers will have a much more comfortable and relaxed experience,” he says.

Head contractor for this latest airport addition was local firm Rilean Construction, with senior project manager Trevor Meikle at the helm.
