Social club founder sells share

The founder of Queenstown’s Sociable Club has sold out after three years.

Deborah Coburn “wants to pursue other ventures”, club co-owner Angie Mills says.

Mills, originally from Scotland, bought into The Sociable Club after coming to New Zealand two years ago.

“I understood first-hand how daunting it is to develop a new social network from scratch with no family or friends around.”

The club has branched out with a Dunedin franchise and Mills also has her eye on Christchurch and Invercargill – but not yet.

The local club has 150 members.

“[But] we need to get Queenstown busier and really exciting first,” Mills says.

Mills describes her club as a community service which helps people new to town or who have recently become single.

The Sociable Club isn’t a dating agency although some people have met someone they’re now in a relationship with, she adds.

Community service or not, members pay $60 to join then $22 a month.
