Queenstown’s affordable housing trust fights back

Queenstown’s affordable housing trust is challenging the Charities Commission over being stripped of its tax-exempt charitable status.

An appeal was filed in Wellington’s High Court last Wednesday, trust chairman David Cole says.

“We sought some independent legal opinion and the advice we’ve had is that the commission has been selective in the use of its information,” he says.

Cole says the trust will go to court on October 4 seeking reinstatement of charitable status until a full hearing is held. Losing charitable status saddles the trust with about $500,000 in annual tax.
