Queenstown pizza restaurant returns after fire

A pizza restaurant destroyed in a major downtown Queenstown fire has found a new home in the CBD.

Fat Badgers will reopen in about five weeks’ time in Camp Street, taking a slice of the premises latterly occupied by Freiya’s Indian Restaurant.

The fire, which started in the kitchen of Fat Badgers’ kitchen on May 24 last year, also destroyed The World Bar on the floor above.

The pizza restaurant – originally opened three-and-a-half years earlier – had only reopened in its new Shotover Street premises three-and-a-half months before.

Fat Badgers co-owner Anthony Waldock says finding suitable new premises proved to be difficult.

“We’re really excited with the space we’ve got and can’t wait for it to open.”

The balance of the former Freiya’s premises will be occupied by the Rehab juice bar, which already has an outlet at Frankton’s Terrace Junction.

The World Bar, meanwhile, opened a temporary venue, The Find, also in Shotover St, soon after the fire.

The World Bar owners hope to be back on their original site when property owner Boydcorp Finance rebuilds.
