Queenstown-based AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand has bought Auckland Sky Tower’s SkyJump and SkyWalk.
The company, founded 26 years ago when it launched the commercial bungy industry in Queenstown, has bought the businesses from founder and managing director Steve Wiedman.
The jump, offering a 192m leap off Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower, was launched in 2001.
The nail-biting walk around the tower, 192m above the ground, followed six years later.
Bungy NZ founder and managing director Henry van Asch says the purchase, effective November 6, means the company now owns 10 adventure and personal challenge across New Zealand.
Two of those activities, a bungy jump and bridge climb, are on Auckland’s other iconic tourist attraction, the harbour bridge.
“We’re looking forward to working with Tourism NZ and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development to raise awareness around what this region has to offer for the soft and hard adventure-seeking tourist,” Van Asch says.
Given AJ Hackett Bungy NZ is the pioneer of adventure tourism, “there’s no better custodian to continue delivering this unique operation at the highest level”, Weidman says.
