On yer hydrobike, Harriet

Queenstowner Harriet Shaw test drives a new hydrobike at Lake Hayes on Sunday.

Harriet, 15, asked for a ride when she saw Hydrobike NZ’s promoter Richard Hawkridge taking one for a spin.

“It’s fun, I really like it. It’s easier than kayaking and you don’t get wet.”

Queenstowner Hawkridge has acquired the rights to sell the contraption in New Zealand.

The hydrobike, which has a metal frame attached to two plastic pontoons, has a cruising speed of about 10 kilometres per hour and retails for $3750.

Hawkridge suggests the hyrdrobike could be a great commuter vehicle, good for fishing and as a leisure craft.
