New tourist draw unzipped

This giant wooden hut gives a sneak-peak into Queenstown’s newest adventure tourism activity.

It’s one of the platforms for an ambitious flying fox operation up Bob’s Peak that is due to open before Christmas.

Run by Ziptrek Eco-Tours – an off-shoot of a Canadian company – it’ll mix thrill-seeking rides with educational walks.

Building has been underway since August, but the company remains locked in a legal battle with Bob’s Peak gondola operator Skyline Enterprises.

Skyline wants some of the area used by Ziptrek to expand its gondola and luge operation– so it recently took Ziptrek to the High Court.

Ziptrek director Trent Yeo says he has all the regulatory requirements and the consent challenge won’t affect business.

“That inhabits the least part of my brain for the things I have to think about. Ziptrek is in the throes of employing lots of locals.

“We’re establishing at least 30 jobs in this town and we’re just about to employ a sales and marketing manager.

“Our lawyers are doing their work and they’re happily supporting us to say just go ahead with whatever you need to do.”
