Less pain in paying levy

This automated kiosk is a new addition at Queenstown Airport to take some of the pain out of paying the $25 international departure levy.

Two of the kiosks have been installed at a total cost of $55,000 to relieve what airport management calls “unacceptable congestion”.

One kiosk takes cash, the other eftpos and credit cards.

Levy stickers have previously been sold only at Travelex – the money exchange firm continues to sell them and is now joined by six other airport retailers.

Passengers can also pay the levy in advance on the airport website.

Airlines were initially asked to build the levy into ticket prices but gave the idea a thumbs-down.
