Upmarket Queenstown restaurant Gantleys celebrates 20 years in business next week.
The Arthurs Point restaurant was opened on April 17, 1993, by Karyn and Ian Mill after an extensive refurbishment of the historic landmark it occupies.
The stone and wood building has stood on site since the height of the goldrush era and celebrates its own 150th anniversary this year.
It was opened in 1863 as a wayside inn by Queenstown’s first policeman, Patrick Gantley, and operated as the Packers Arms Restaurant in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Mills sold the lease to Ian’s nephew Brent Rands and head chef Jared Aldridge in 2003 and they have operated it since then.
Rands says: “Over the past two decades, Gantleys has been host to many special occasions from fabulous weddings to dinner parties and gala events for the Hollywood, political and corporate elite.”
The restaurant’s wine list is recognised as one of the best in world and has won an Award of Excellence from prestigious New York magazine Wine Spectator every year since 1996.
A cocktail function will be held next Thursday.
