Lake flights get an airing

Noise tests for a proposed floatplane operation on Lake Wakatipu were conducted on this Te Anau-based Cessna 206 last Thursday.

Acoustic engineer Malcolm Hunt, of Wellington, measured noise levels during landings, taxiing, idling and takeoffs at Frankton Arm by the marina (above), and at Glenorchy.

Weather conditions on Queenstown Bay, the third proposed landing area, were too windy.

South African-based Kiwi pilot Brent Collins, who has moved here to run the business, originally intended operating a De Havilland Beaver but now intends using a Cessna 206. His consent application has been lodged by his Queenstown planning consultancy, John Edmonds & Associates.

The noise tests were requested by Queenstown Lakes District Council’s regulatory arm Lakes Environmental.
