Jetstar boss’ high hopes for Sydney-Queenstown service


The boss of budget airline Jetstar believes new direct flights from Queenstown to Sydney will be well supported.
The Qantas subsidiary has announced it will offer a new daily Wellington to Queenstown flight with a lowest-price fare of $79 – and a new twice-weekly Sydney to Queenstown flight starting from $199 one-way if booked online. 

The timing of the new Sydney connections make for a perfect long weekend in either Sydney or Queenstown. 

Queenstowners can fly to Sydney on Friday or Monday mornings and return on Monday or Friday afternoons – and vice versa. 

Visitors from Wellington can arrive in Queenstown by 10.30am daily – the return leg lands in the capital at 12.25pm daily. 

The new services kick off on December 22. 

Jetstar is also adding a third Melbourne to Queenstown flight and two extra Auckland to Queenstown flights, taking those to 11 per week. 

From November 8, it is canning its twice weekly service connecting Queenstown and the Gold Coast. 

Jetstar Australia and New Zealand chief executive David Hall, in Queenstown to announce the new Sydney and Wellington routes this week, tells Mountain Scene he thinks the long weekend in Queenstown will prove popular with Sydneysiders. 

“I think it will be a very supported service and the vast majority of services we enter we stay on those services.” 

The Sydney service had been deliberately scheduled to get more Sydneysiders weekending in Queenstown. 

Hall wouldn’t talk numbers when asked about why the direct flights to the Gold Coast had been axed, other than to say it was highly seasonal. 

Hall says the new low-fare options will have spin-offs for the Queenstown economy. 

“Jetstar’s fares are consistently low, which makes it easier for people to travel and leaves them with more money to spend when they arrive.” 

Jetstar first began Queenstown flights two years ago, carrying 238,000 passenger numbers to and from the resort in the past financial year. 

Destination Queensotwn boss Tony Everitt says DQ has been actively marketing to Wellingtonians, Aucklanders and Sydneysiders. 

“These extra flights will make it even easier for visitors to access the resort and enjoy all the activities on offer.”
