International guest nights are on the rise in Queenstown – with the highest number on record for August.

Figures released by Statistics New Zealand’s August Commercial Accommodation Monitor shows 182,135 guest nights – the highest in the country – were racked up in the resort in August. An increase of 11.4 per cent compared to last year.

Domestic visitor nights also saw a two and a half per cent boost to 68,931 in comparison to August 2009. In total, Queenstown’s guest nights jumped almost nine per cent to 251,066.

Destination Queenstown’s general marketing manager Graham Budd says the accommodation sector is tracking well for an excellent winter season.

“Key accommodation sectors have experienced another month of strong guest night growth which continues the recent trend of year-on-year growth.

“Occupancy rates for hotels, motels and apartments also showed very pleasing growth compared to 2009.
Backpacker accommodation also achieved good results considering that occupancy capacity in this market has increased by 13 percent since last year.”

July 2010 was the biggest month ever recorded in Queenstown for international guest nights.
