A Frankton petrol station’s novel ‘happy hour’ price promotion is continuing for another month.
Mobil Queenstown has been discounting fuel by two cents per litre between 5-7pm on weekdays since May.
Owner Daniel Murphy says the local initiative has been so well received they’re retaining it for the traditionally busier month of July.
“We were just trying to consider some ways to make the prices a little bit cheaper for people without them necessarily having to spend hundreds of dollars at a supermarket,” Murphy says.
“I know that bars do [happy hour promotions] all the time. It has probably never been seen before at a service station so we thought we’d try something new. It may not be a lot that we’re giving away but we’re giving it away for free.”
Murphy adds: “We don’t know if it’s had a huge effect on us but it’s making people feel good anyway, and hopefully that’s encouraging them to come back to us.”
Queenstown Mobil is a family affair – Murphy’s father owned it for 17 years until 2005 and Murphy himself bought the business in 2009 after working there for a decade.
