Former Queenstown ski instructor wins building award

A long-time former Queenstown ski instructor who’s joined the building industry has won a national apprentice award.

Shane Pilkinton, an adult apprentice with Masterwood Joinery in Cromwell, won a Registered Master Joiners category award this month for his work on a contemporary kitchen for a new Wanaka home.

Masterwood Joinery also produces kitchens and other interior features for many homes and other premises in the Queenstown area.

Pilkinton – who wore a cedar tie at the awards ceremony crafted for him by a workmate – was also acknowledged as the designer of a ‘zipper door’ that won another apprentice several awards.

Masterwood general manager Don McDonald describes his apprentice’s commitment as extraordinary.

“It’s fantastic to see someone of Shane’s more mature age so keen about joinery and his future as a joiner.”

Pilkinton, who is in his mid-40s, will be out of his apprenticeship by the end of the year.
