US billionaire Peter Thiel – the angel investor who bankrolled Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 – is looking at buying a property in Queenstown.

Speaking to Auckland’s Weekend Herald, Thiel says he’s dipped his toe into New Zealand property with a purchase in Parnell – and Queenstown is next on his shopping list.

He told the Weekend Herald his love affair with NZ began 18 years ago with an adventure-tourism trip to Queenstown.

Thiel, 43, certainly picks winners – he co-founded PayPal in 1998, sold it 2002 for US$1.5 billion, then became the first outside investor in Facebook in 2004.

His initial US$500,000 grubstake in Facebook is now thought to be worth more than US$1 billion.
