Doctor Evil’s’ dessert plans

Start brushing, Queenstown. A dentist – yes, dentist – is opening a third dessert restaurant in the Wakatipu.

Doctor Gaurav Taneja’s Earnslaw Park parlour will offer the gastronomic delights of luxury Swiss brand Movenpick.

That includes ice cream, hot and cold desserts, coffees and hot chocolate.

“The whole idea is to create an evil empire where I feed them ice cream and then fix their teeth,” Taneja says.

“It’s very Doctor Evil.

“It’s going to be a very busy store because Movenpick is an excellent product – the only top-end ice cream we get in New Zealand.”

Auckland-based Taneja and business partner Fadil Kardaman fell in love with Queenstown while studying at Otago University.

They have spent two years looking for ideal premises in Queenstown. The parlour will open this month in the former Positive Image premises on Beach Street.

“Queenstown does not have a dessert parlour,” Taneja says. “You go out for dinner and then pretty much have to have dessert at the restaurant you’ve just eaten in.

“And at $15-odd they’re sometimes not the most appreciable desserts to have, they don’t necessarily taste great.
“Queenstown, with all its international profile over the summer and winter, has really been missing out.”
