Wakatipu restaurants are among a chosen few to receive prestigious plonk awards from US magazine Wine Spectator.

The magazine has dished out Wine Award for Excellence gongs to True South at The Rees hotel on Frankton Road and The Millhouse Restaurant at Millbrook Resort near Arrowtown.

Just seven top-tier New Zealand restaurants have been recognised for the award.

High-end Queenstown eatery Gantley’s has also been listed with Wine Spectator.

Restaurants must have at least 100 wines that thematically match the establishment’s cuisine to be eligible.

True South food and beverage boss Candice Chow says as well as world-famous French vintages, True South is a great supporter of local wines.

The Rees chief executive Mark Rose says it’s recognition of the effort they have put into building a world-class cellar while confirming their place as one of New Zealand’s elite dining experiences.

“Wine Spectator is known as an industry bible so to have this tribute from such a widely-read and esteemed reviewer is huge kudos.”

The Millhouse manager Paul Hignett says the menu changes every two to three weeks to reflect produce availability and seasonal freshness.

It also offers customers wines from around the world.

“[But] we have a focus on local Central Otago and New Zealand wine that matches the tastes of Central Otago on the menu.”
