Bus driver charged over Mt Nicholas death

A 62-year-old woman has been charged over the death of a United States tourist at Mt Nicholas Station in April.

Richard Phillip Hyde, 73, of Massachussetts, died when a bus reversed into him during a farm tour run by tourism company Southern Discoveries.

Police announced yesterday the driver had been charged with careless driving causing death.

She is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court on September 19.

Southern Discoveries boss Tim Hunter declined to comment yesterday.

But last month he told Mountain Scene the driver had returned to work but was not on driving duties.

The company had since installed reversing cameras on its buses and changed its operating procedures, aimed at minimising reversing manoeuvres.
