Bungy king pleads guilty to drink-driving

Queenstown bungy pioneer and wine label owner Henry van Asch has pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

Van Asch, 52, of Dalefield, was charged after being stopped by police in Robins Rd on November 13 last year.

The level of alcohol in his blood was 152mg – more than three times the legal limit.

He pleaded guilty in Queenstown’s district court today and is scheduled to appear again in April – when his lawyer Bill Dawkins will ask for Van Asch to be discharged without conviction.

Mountain Scene and ODT asked to take Van Asch’s photo today.

Dawkins – who asked Judge Christina Cook whether the media application should be reported at all – says there is no necessity for a photo to be taken of him standing in the dock. He even dubbed it “sensationalism”.

Cook agreed and denied the application.

As well as being the co-founder of AJ Hackett Bungy, van Asch is the owner of van Asch Wines.
