Budd the new Destination Queenstown big cheese

Destination Queenstown marketing manager Graham Budd has won promotion to the chief executive’s job.

Budd takes over the role today (Monday) from Tony Everitt. 

Everitt left last month to join Tourism New Zealand’s executive team as Asian markets general manager. 

It’s third time lucky for Budd who first applied for the job when he missed out to Australian Stephen Pahl who lasted eight months before abruptly resigning. Budd missed out again when Everitt got the nod six months later.

“The board undertook a robust, thorough recruitment process to attract the best possible candidates for this key role and Graham’s proven skills, depth of marketing experience and strong industry relationships won him our support,” DQ chairman Mark Quickfall says. 

Budd has had his marketing role with DQ for five years and helped implement its ‘Pure Inspiration’ positioning.
Among his marketing initiatives was the Classic All Blacks v French Classics rugby game held in Queenstown during last year’s Rugby World Cup. 

Budd brings 25 years’ marketing experience to his new job including lead roles with multinationals Unilever, Wrightson, Colgate Palmolive, Lexis Nexis and General Cable. 

“I’m thrilled to be appointed to the role and thank the board for their confidence in selecting me,” Budd says. 

“I’m very proud to have the opportunity to lead a great team who already do a fantastic job for our community in promoting and representing Queenstown around the world. 

“I already enjoy very good relationships with the board, team, members, industry and Government so I’ll be looking to build on those partnerships to further strengthen Queenstown’s position in the global market.” 

Budd will continue as a board member of both Regional Tourism Organisations of NZ and Leading Mountain Resorts of the World.
