Bodies confirmed as Canadian trampers

The families of two Canadian trampers confirmed dead on the Kepler Track have thanked police and
search teams.

The bodies of Louis-Vincent Lessard and his friend Etienne Lemieux were found in avalanche debris about 350m below the track earlier this week.

A post-mortem was completed yesterday morning after which the pair were formally identified.

Police and the Canadian consular services are working towards repatriating the two industrial design students at the University of Montreal, who were in New Zealand for an adventure holiday.

Lemieux’s family released a statement late yesterday evening. “We want people to know that Etienne was a remarkable young man who went to New Zealand and fulfilled his dream.”

A statement from Lessard’s family adds: “The Goyette-Lessard family is extremely grateful in the
way the search was conducted and wish to thank everyone both near and far for the efforts they made during these operations.
