Big-ticket art under hammer

This landscape of early Queenstown by colonial artist Charles Blomfield goes under the hammer on November 24.

Blomfield’s work, painted while visiting here in 1889, is expected to fetch $120,000-$160,000 when auctioned at Elizabeth Cunnane’s (above) Hamilton gallery.

Fine Art Society NZ’s Grant Bezett says it “would be great” if a Queenstown person or
organisation bought the work for public display.

But Queenstown Lakes District Council’s quango, Aspiring Arts & Culture Trust, won’t be bidding for it, says trust chair Janet Malloch.

“We have no knowledge of it and we get $50,000 a year, so we will not be bidding.”
