Teenager Sophia Purdon’s dancing on air after perfect exam scores – the best in Australasia and beyond.
The 13-year-old, who’s trained with Anna Stuart’s Queenstown School of Dance since the age of six, received 100 per cent pass rates in both jazz and hip-hop Asia Pacific Dance Association exams.
The syllabus covers schools in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, and some in South Africa and England.
Sophia says: “It’s pretty big for me because I’ve been doing these exams since I started dancing. I was over the moon when I got 100. I’m very passionate about making dance a career.”
Sophia, who trains more than six hours a week, earned a place in Auckland’s hip-hop ‘Bubblegum Crew’ after auditions at the Palace Dance Studio, but couldn’t relocate so has started her own Queenstown crew.
Queenstown School of Dance, which has 270 students, will perform two shows of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre and contemporary dance at Queenstown Memorial Centre this Sunday, 4.30pm, and Monday, 6.30pm.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for students and preschoolers.
