Barclay talks tourism, farming and Thatcher

Tyro MP Todd Barclay has delivered his maiden speech to Parliament.

The National Party member was elected to represent Clutha-Southland just over a month ago with a 14,886 majority.

Barclay, who replaced Bill English in the safe seat, spoke before the House of Representatives for the first time yesterday.

His maiden speech details his upbringing, career path to parliament, and political ethos – quoting firebrand former British Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher on libertarianism.

Barclay also describes Queenstown as unique.

“We’re incredibly lucky, that unlike many other parts of the country, our challenge is managing the pace of growth and development, not generating it.”
