Young Queenstown jazz musicians have enjoyed a golden turn at a recent festival.
Two bands from Wakatipu High School recently took a road trip to Blenheim for the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival.
High school teacher Monica Parker says the musicians had “outstanding success” this year.
Both bands, The Jazz Ensemble and The Jazz Combo, received gold gradings, the highest grading possible.
The Jazz Ensemble received best overall ensemble, while Eliott Allemand received best saxophone and Harrison Maguire received best drummer.
“Both boys were in the All Stars band which represented some of the strongest players from throughout the week,” Parker says.
Twenty-two bands from 13 South Island schools took part in the festival.
Each school competed, had a masterclass with the judges, performed at various gigs in the area and then participated in a final gala evening performance at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim.
