Qantas has replaced Air New Zealand as Queenstown Winter Festival’s major airline sponsor.
The Australian airline today (Tuesday) confirmed it will be a key sponsor for the 40th festival from June 20-29.
Coinciding with this announcement Qantas says it’s also adding more 650 seats each week to its Sydney-Queenstown services over winter.
Air NZ has traditionally sponsored the festival although it refused to renew its contract ahead of last year’s event before coming back in a reduced role.
Graham Budd, boss of festival owner Destination Queenstown, told Mountain Scene in January he was very disappointed to lose Air NZ for this year’s 40th festival but he was quietly confident the event would receive some other airline support.
Festival manager Lisa Buckingham says she’s thrilled to have Qantas onboard.
“The Winter Festival has been attracting Australians over the years and this partnership with Qantas will further enhance our ability to raise the profile of the American Express Queenstown Winter festival in the Australian market.
“The fact that a major international brand like Qantas sees great value in the festival just goes to highlight the quality of the event.”
An airline sponsor is also considered useful for the festival in terms of flying in special guests and performers.
