An Auckland-based sporting event company will manage the popular annual off-road Motatapu races between Wanaka and Arrowtown.
Lagardere Unlimited Oceania will run the event for the Queenstown Trails Trust.
The trust bought Motatapu last year to provide ongoing funding for the development and maintenance of the Wakatipu walking/cycling trails network.
“There is significant potential for the Motatapu to grow further and we have exciting and innovative plans to create new events to appeal to a wider cross-section of people,” trust chief executive Mandy Kennedy says.
“With this in mind we also require the services of a professional sporting event company such as Lagardere to deliver the Motatapu and help us take it to an even greater level.”
The new partnership will also increase profits for the trust, Kennedy says.
“Through this network, entries from the Auckland and Australian markets in particular are expected to grow and help increase the overall profit for the trust.”
Kennedy says the appointment of the management company will allow the trust to focus on its core business.
“We are confident that with the solid reputation Lagardere has established as a sporting event specialist the Motatapu will be in excellent hands.”
Lagardere is also staging the inaugural Air New Zealand Queenstown International Marathon on November 22, using some sections of the 110km Queenstown Trail, and had already named the trust as its official charity.
This year’s 10th Motatapu, including a mountain bike race and marathon from Wanaka to Arrowtown, attracted a record 4116 entries.
