Arrowtown rockers place second in national band comp

Arrowtown School band The Freckled Mangoes has placed second in this year’s Rockshop Bandquest for intermediate and primary school students.

The six-piece, who last month won the Otago regional final in Dunedin, were judged second only to Auckland’s Avondale Intermediate’s R&B band, The Elements.

Judges Leroy Clampitt from Kiwi band Bangladesh and pop artist and radio announcer K’Lee McNabb judged the final yesterday (Monday) on video footage submitted by regional winners and runners-up.

The Freckled Mangoes won a credit with NZ Rockshops the value of $1000 for their school music department.

Lead guitarist Jack Ryan’s song, Don’t Contradict Me, which the band performed for the video, along with Bruno Mars’ If I Knew, also won ‘best original song’.

Jack is joined in the band by Tom Rose and Isla Gourlay on vocals, Jensen Forsyth on bass, rhythm guitarist Jayden Lapsley-Fowler and drummer Rafe Swan.

The band is trained by Arrowtown School performing arts teacher Karen Neill.

Bandquest, the younger sibling of Smokefreerockquest, is in its third year.
