Wakatipu Anglers Club’s holding its annual one-day flyfishing course this Saturday.

A hands-on introduction to the skills required to catch trout on the fly, it runs from 9am till 5pm at the Queenstown Events Centre, with the theory session held inside and casting lessons outside.

The cost is $150, with course-goers also getting 50% off their first-year membership.

Formerly held over four mid-week evenings, the new format has increased participation  rates, club committee member Conor O’Boyle says.

‘‘The feedback survey’s all been really good.’’

Meanwhile, O’Boyle says the club’s thriving with membership increasing year on year — there are about 70 active members from teenagers up to an 80-year-old.

There are many young members, but also still an older cohort — ‘‘maybe being around younger guys keeps them young’’.

‘‘We run monthly trips away and we try to freshen up the calendar each year.’’
