Airbag fun up Coronet

Novice skiers and snowboarders wanting to hurl themselves off a large kicker now can – with an airbag (above) for safety.

Queenstown operator NZSki is putting a giant airbag up Coronet Peak beside a 2.5-metre jump for patrons to try aerials without consequences.

The 2.5m high, 15m long and 11m wide bag will be up for night skiing tomorrow and Saturday at the Elephant Pit.

Coronet’s Ross Copland says anybody can try it for $5 a hit and there’s no age limit.

“It’s more based on people’s confidence,” Copland says, adding there’s no gap between the jump and bag.

A coach will be on hand to dish out advice – and Copland says it’s a use-it-or-lose-it set-up.

A bbq and DJ tunes will also be cranking nearby.

Sunday sees kids’ fun up Coronet Peak with games and treasure hunts all day long at the base building plus performances by Wonky Donkey artist Craig Smith.
