QUEENSTOWN police have recovered an air pistol after an incident on Friday when a man shot himself in the leg.

Officers were called to Frankton shortly before lunchtime that day after reports of someone brandishing a pistol.

The man had allegedly removed the pistol from his trouser waistband before walking down Lower Stewart Street towards Frankton Motor Camp.

About the same time, ambulance control received a 111 call from a 29-year-old man stating he had shot himself in the leg.

Detective sergeant Brian Cameron says: “The man who suffered only minor bruising eventually revealed the location of the weapon to police who recovered it later that same evening.”

The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and will appear in Queenstown District Court next Monday.
