Air New Zealand is to trial a baggage check-in service (right) in Queenstown’s CBD.
It’s aimed at passengers vacating accommodation in the morning ahead of mid/late afternoon flights – and requires council to convert parking spaces into a loading zone outside Air NZ’s Church Street office.
There’s a loading zone on the opposite side of Church St but it’s unsuitable as Civil Aviation Authority security rules require baggage to be loaded in direct line of sight from Air NZ’s offices.
The airline wanted exclusive use of the loading zone but council officials rejected this because of legal uncertainty and fear of creating a precedent.
Air NZ will meet the council’s costs of installing new road markings and removing them should the trial be unsuccessful.
