Queenstown sports stalwarts heading a community collective taking on council quango Lakes Leisure are worried future recreation developments could be stalled.

Craig “Ferg” Ferguson, Merv Aoake and Simon Spark represent local sports clubs after a public outcry last December against high fees charged by LL, Queenstown Lakes District Council’s newest quango. The trio are due to meet LL bosses for the second time next Tuesday.

Sports groups are worried about what’s being provided for in QLDC’s soon-to-be-released long-term sporting plan, Ferguson says. “There’s a concern council have pushed [projects] out about three or four years. [We’re] pushing the view of the sports community not to be kept in the dark or left in the corner.”

Ferguson’s planning another public “user group” meeting in the next couple of weeks.
