The Kawarau Falls Station collapse has meant two local hotel concierges have to work out a Plan B.
Nathan Wise and Bryan Wilkinson of the Crowne Plaza and Sofitel hotels respectively – the resort’s only members of the International Union of Concierges – successfully pitched for their group’s 2013 conference at a presentation in Wellington on May 30.
Up to 700 delegates are expected.
But Wise and Wilkinson based their bid on staging the global pow-wow at a planned 1000-seat conference centre at Kawarau Falls Station – and with the giant development now in receivership, construction of the large function centre is up in the air.
The organisers are undaunted, however – Wilkinson says 2013 is a long way off and even if the Kawarau Falls centre doesn’t get off the ground, the international concierge jamboree will still go ahead. There’s also no risk of numbers having to be capped – at worst, delegates would be split over several small venues, he says.
