Olympic fever has hit Queenstown primary school kids this week.

Youngsters from Queenstown Primary, St Joseph’s School, Arrowtown School, Remarkables Primary and KingsView School are participating in the inaugural Queenstown Olympics sports tournament today and tomorrow.

Organised by Lakes Leisure, 700 Years 5-8 kids have been taught netball, soccer, rugby league, rugby and swimming by specialist coaches over eight weeks, culminating in inter-school games at the Events Centre.

The kids took part in opening and closing ceremonies, including reading out the Olympic oath. Twenty eight countries are being represented over the two-day tournament – each participating class had to learn about and dress as their selected country.

“It’s about participation – kids having a go and trying something new,” organiser and Lakes Leisure sports and recreation coordinator Jendi Paterson says.
