A French man told Queenstown District Court he regrets stealing food from a Queenstown supermarket as he loves New Zealand.
22-year-old Guillaume Ferdinand Pringault, who works at a Cromwell vineyard, pleaded guilty in court today to one charge of theft from Fresh Choice supermarket.
On June 25 Pringault – with a friend at Fresh Choice – ate a croissant and put $24 worth of cheese into his pocket and left the supermarket, Queenstown police prosecutor Ian Collins said.
Collins said Pringault had no intention to pay.
Pringault said he really wanted to stay in New Zealand as he loved the country and the wine here.
“It’s really important for me to say I’m a hard-worker and I love working on the farm.”
His defence lawyer said Pringault did intend to pay for the food but he had no money at the time.
Judge Phil Moran asked the defendant if stealing from shops is illegal in France and said a conviction will look bad on his record for travel.
“I recognise for you a conviction has very serious consequences.”
He was ordered to pay $200 to the Salvation Army by this Thursday and – if he did so – he would be discharged.
Sleepy drink driver
A Queenstown man from the United Kingdom pleaded guilty to drink driving in Queenstown District Court today.
Matthew Boyce a 29-year-old from Fernhill fell asleep at a friend’s house after a night of drinking on June 30, Queenstown Police prosecutor Ian Collins said.
Boyce woke up at 4.30am, and thought he had been asleep for longer than he had, so he drove home but was stopped on Lake Esplanade by police.
He blew 698 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The legal limit is 400mg.
Boyce was disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay $550 plus court charges.

CONSIDERATION WITH THIS VERSION
I think Kiwi people have to know the real situation for the overseas people in New Zeland! There are a lot of French people travelling and workink in NZ , Why? because your border it's open (you need factory people in your company) and also because in France now it's very dificult to have a job. New Zeland is very expensive country for live, and sometimes it's very dificult to survive (the same for kiwi people)... This guys are young , and they just want to eat something , "His defence lawyer said Pringault did intend to pay for the food but he had no money at the time", NO MONEY... and it's the same for a lot of overseas people who live here, because they are not kiwi , they have not a really good job..so not a lot of money. This guys work everyday in farm and everybody know it's very hard job! plus not a lot of money at the end. They are not "mongrel" , just young and with not a lot of money! For the ChCh , they not got diversion they are just looking for job in other city, and for the book was french book , and they just want to read this book and after let the book at the library.
So please people , there are things most important in this world like: low price in supermarket job opportunity for young people and free education for all!
New Zeland was the first country of progress but since a right new governant NZ and the DOC are now Department of Contradiction.
Think about that...

WHATS GOING ON QUEENSTOWN and MOUNTAIN SCENE!!!!!!!!
This French mongrel and two of his mates (one of which would have been the other offender at the Queenstown supermarket) stole VALUABLE books from the ChCh Library where it is in the Red Zone and they were part of a removal team. They got DIVERSION! and now they steal in Queenstown and get hit with a wet bus ticket!! They are criminals ripping off our country and they will continue to do so. They need to be DEPORTED immediately!!
What is going on with our Judicial System!!
Mountain Scene, you need to expose these mongrels!!!!
