Moving on: Wakatipu High at its original site on Fryer Street
Education Minister Hekia Parata has confirmed long-awaited news that Wakatipu High will be rebuilt at Frankton’s Remarkables Park.

Parata announced that her ministry has bought an eight-hectare site.

The high school will relocate from its cramped, cold Queenstown site in Fryer Street.

A ministry press release states it’ll happen in the near future.

“The site is located to the south of the airport and will include a planned extension of the existing retail park as well as cultural, health, healthcare and residential developments,” Parata says.

“The proposed facilities adjacent to the school will give the students of Queenstown new and exciting educational opportunities while learning within a modern 21st century environment.”

The ministry says the Frankton Flats is a logical location given its centrality and its future student population.

Ironically, Wakatipu High recently spent $3 million on a performing arts block, a cafeteria development and gym extensions.
