Encouraged: Destination Queenstown boss Graham Budd
Queenstown visitor arrival numbers, released today (Friday), are predictably an improvement on the same month last year.

Guest nights were up 19.3 per cent to 143,063, according to Statistics New Zealand’s commercial accommodation monitor.

Destination Queenstown boss Graham Budd says the figures indicate a strong start to winter.

However Budd notes that visitor numbers in June last year were affected by travel disruptions from Chilean volcanic ash and from low early-season snow.

Comparing this June with June last year, international guests nights increased 12.9 per cent to 82,579, accounting for 57.7 per cent of all guest nights.

Domestic guest nights were up 29.3 per cent to 60,484.

“It’s good to see a continued recovery in 2012,” Budd says.
