Queenstowner Royna Benseman has been helping newly-upgraded Olympic gold medallist Valerie Adams celebrate in Switzerland this week.

Benseman interviewed shot putter Adams for TV3 less than six hours after the Kiwi athlete learnt her rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk had been stripped of gold for failing a drug test.

The Queenstowner, who’s lived in Switzerland for about four years, started the interview: “We’re here with our very best friend Valerie Adams, our nation’s gold medallist.”

Benseman also posted a photo of herself celebrating with Adams on her Facebook page.

Adams, who won gold at the Beijing Olympics four years ago, was based in Biel, Switzerland, during her preparations for the London Games.

The build-up to her original silver medal-winning performance last week was affected after a New Zealand official accidentally left her name off the competition starting list.

Benseman isn’t Adams’ sole Queenstown link – the champion shot putter visited the resort several years ago as guest speaker at a Halberg Trust luncheon.
