Record rides: A Skyline Enterprises' gondola car transports mountain bikes to the top of the Queenstown Bike Park
Queenstown Bike Park enjoyed two of its busiest days on record last week with 3000 runs down the tracks.

The numbers at the park accessed via Skyline Enterprises’ gondola were swelled by competitors and spectators staying in town after the first round of the New Zealand Mountain Bike Cup, which took place on the new grass downhill track at the Remarkables.

Skyline mountain bike co-ordinator Brad Rowe says numbers at the park on Tuesday and Wednesday after the race were just massive.

“We had a couple of our biggest days ever. Last week we did 6300 rides and over those two days it was about 3000.

“We couldn’t hold the race at that time of year but the event really benefitted the whole town.”

Skyline has sold 335 full-season passes and already 34 half-season passes for January to April. The park was closed for two weeks over Christmas but is now open again.

“People are coming for pure bike holidays,” Rowe says.

“They will buy one of these half season passes so they can ride as much as they can for a few weeks or a month.

“A group of six Aussie guys from Perth bought them. They’re staying at Pinewood and just going to spend the whole time they’re here biking.

“First half was great in terms of the number of riders and developing the park. A lot of work has been done there with trail maintenance and opening up a couple of new trails.”
