Crashing down: It's been one year since a deadly 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch

Queenstown’s mayor is urging people to not just reflect on the devastating Christchurch earthquake - but consider their own preparedness.
Today marks a year since the 6.3 magnitude quake shook the South Island’s biggest city to its core, resulting in a death toll of 185 people.
Remembrance services are being held throughout the country – and yesterday in Queenstown, Anglican Church goers served up pancakes to the public for Shrove Tuesday in return for gold coin donations to the Christchurch rebuild.
Queenstown mayor Vanessa van Uden says it’s a sobering anniversary but is urging the community to do more than just remember.
“As we look to our South Island neighbours and prepare to reflect on the challenges of the last twelve months it seems to me that we can make this date an annual milestone to prepare in another way.
“It seems appropriate to call on the community to respectfully use the time before the anniversary to look to their own preparedness,” Van Uden says.
“If remembering the tragic loss of life on February 22, 2011, and the continuing challenges that face the Canterbury communities does not spur people to think about how they would cope in the same circumstances then I don’t know what will.”
