Queenstown police want to hear from any witnesses to a serious assault in a nightclub last Saturday.

A 26-year-old Queenstown man is in Dunedin Hospital in an induced coma after suffering head injuries. The man was in a critical but stable condition yesterday (Monday).

A police statement says the assault occurred between two patrons at Subculture nightspot on Church Street at about 3am.

Detective Matt Jones says it appears the victim was standing near a bar close to an entrance door that leads to Subculture’s games room when an altercation occurred between him and another man.

The victim ended up on the floor unconscious, Jones says.

“Police have already spoken to a number of people who saw the incident but are keen to hear from any further witnesses,” he says.

"Around 30 people were at the Subculture nightclub at the time.”

The victim was initially taken to Lakes District Hospital in Frankton before being transferred to Invercargill then Dunedin where he underwent surgery.

Anyone with information can contact Queenstown police on 441 1600 or call anonymously on the Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
