The facelift for a Queenstown petrol station has been delayed by a month thanks to council red tape, operators claim.
Lynne and Kevin Burns (above), operators of the former Shell station on Frankton Road, this week opened the rebranded yellow and indigo-coloured Z Queenstown after a $400,000, five-week refit.
But the local rebranding hit a stumbling block while Queenstown Lakes District Council had to “approve a couple of things which we didn’t think would be an issue”, Lynne says.
A large ‘Z’ canopy, which is erected at every other Z petrol station, wasn’t allowed to go up because it’s outside planning rules, she adds.
“It is a little disappointing. I respect that council want to keep the environment right but they’ve got to be careful they don’t stop people from investing.”
Lakes Environmental planning boss Brian Fitzpatrick denies the approval process was lengthy.
Fitzpatrick adds there hasn’t been any reduction in the amount of signage approved.
“Some of what had been erected hadn’t been approved so we’re probably bringing them back into line.”
New Zealand’s 210 Shell stations are all being rebranded after Kiwi company Z Energy bought out global giant Shell.
Each rebranded outlet is also distributing $5000 between four local causes on a pro rata basis. Local organisations are Happiness House, Queenstown Lakes Family Centre, Jigsaw and Frankton Fire Brigade.
Customers can vote for which group they support with every purchase of $20 or more over the next month. –
