Record-breaker: Patrick Harris (right) with swim coach Frank Wylie
|
Queenstown swimmer Patrick Harris didn’t just break a longstanding Otago record this Tuesday – he smashed it.
Qualifying seventh-fastest at the national short-course age-group champs in Wellington, Patrick then steeled himself to break the seven-year-old Otago record for 13-year-old boys’ 200m backstroke.
His time of 2min 18.64sec carved almost four seconds off the record and also earned Patrick a bronze medal.
“I was speechless,” the Year 9 Wakatipu High student says.
His is Queenstown Swimming Club’s first medal in winter short-course nationals, long-time senior squad coach Frank Wylie says.
“He’s one of those kids that never ceases to surprise you,” mum Tracee Harris says – Patrick also held another under-age Otago record for the same event a few years ago.
Patrick’s teammates Lauren Kerr, 16, snatched four fourths and Sophie Gibson, 13, added another fourth.
